South Carolina offensive line coach Shawn Elliott knows his players are drawing plenty of pre-season accolades. But Elliott isn’t the kind of guy who likes to look too far ahead, especially since the first snap of the season is a month away.

“Time will tell if we live up to expectations,” he said. “We have the ability to go out – if we practice hard and we keep our focus – to be a pretty decent group. So we’ll just have to wait and see.”

He probably will not have to wait long to see his unit come together given its experience level. Four starters return, led by left guard A.J. Cann and left tackle Corey Robinson, a pair of seniors who were named to the preseason All-SEC second team. Cann (6-foot-4, 311 pounds) has made a team-high 38 career starts, while Robinson (6-8, 344) has 22.

Junior right tackle Brandon Shell (6-6, 333), who has made 23 career starts, and sophomore centers Cody Waldrop (6-2, 309) and Clayton Stadnik (6-3, 273), who split 13 starts last season, also are back.

Spurrier also wants to see his powerful line set the tone for the offense with more physicality and aggression than in previous seasons.

“Certainly with the size we have and the experience, hopefully we can dominate a little bit better than we have in the past,” he said.

Elliott chuckles as he notes that he has heard that message loud and clear. He’s ready for his linemen to start showing that toughness right away with the start of practice.

“We do need to be physical and we need to be more aggressive. At times we can be nasty,” Elliott said. “So we’ll work on that in fall camp. Maybe if he lets us be a little bit more nasty on the field during practice, we can carry over a little bit.”

I like the part about being nasty. It's something I keep hearing over and over again. They are supposed to be a mean and violent bunch.

I hope we see some rotation on the line, honestly. I think all five starters are going to be outstanding, but what worries me is if they actually are. If we go from returning four solid O-lineman this year to replacing four O-lineman next year (assuming Shell goes pro, which he most definitely could if he has a standout year), it could hurt if the backups don't get some good time out there. I think our depth is very talented, but I want them to get some experience in before they're thrust onto the main stage...

Next year we'll have Waldrop, Matulis, both Stadnicks, Sport, Zandi, and Rodgers returning with various levels of experience.

Waldrop, Clayton Stadnick, Matulis and Sport have all already started at least one game, and Zandi has gotten a bunch of playing time (most at TE however). Rodgers and Brock Stadnick played a lot against Arkansas last year and both should be studs.

I'm not too worried about the line next year. They'll be some playing time for the guys playing next year during games against Furman and South Alabama at least

IDK if Shell leaves this season. It will depend upon his UC Evaluation. Also the coaches have to select him as one of the underclassmen they even want the NFL-AC to look at. He might benefit by staying another year and showing he can also play LT.
