Michael Amiridis, Ph.D., current Chancellor of the University of Illinois Chicago and former Provost of the University of South Carolina Columbia

quote:

Prior to his leadership at UIC, Amiridis spent more than two decades on the University of South Carolina’s Columbia campus, serving as a professor, dean of the College of Engineering and Computing, and the university’s executive vice president for academic affairs and provost before leaving for Chicago in 2015.

I have no fricking clue anything about him

What do the more connected people have to say?

Will be fire Tanner?

Personally I am very happy with the hire. I wanted the guy from purdue considering he was an engineering guy, so to get Amiridis makes me pretty happy.

He has been at USC in some capacity for 20 years, so he does love the university. I guess when it comes to football and athletics that means something

Guess you’re right about that
Want some with a science or business background
Not one of these liberal arse sociology or women’s studies degrees

I very much so agree. Though Caslen wasnt a guy with a degree in liberal arts and he was god awful. Pastides also has a background in science (personally I love him but i am not sure everyone on this board does)

Pastides was an arrogant entitled shite who cares more about Yankeeing up the University than it being the flagship of the state where our best and brightest want to go to continue their education.

he wasnt qualified to run a research university. The optics alone from his hiring were awful.

as far as him personally, he wasnt liked by students or faculty. He victim blamed rape victims in his speech he gave before being hired. There was also a complaint out there that he plagiarized another speech.

also calling us U of Cal was pretty bad.

his sons are also garbage and were garbage before he was hired. So can't say any part of him is good.

Everyone is entitled to their opinions, I was there in 2010-2015 and I really liked Pastides. He genuinely cared about the students, our academics, and athletics. If you want to dislike him because you feel he Yankee'd up our school thats fine, but I do believe he loves USC and did what he felt was best for the university. I do also seem to remember out of state kids being upset because of his commitment to South Carolina residents. USC made a big push towards 2010 to allow any SC residents with a 3.0 and average SAT scores. Out of state kids got angry because they needed much higher scores to get in

Well our school is still very largely Yankee
It’s been Yankeefied
And I don’t feel a guy from Greece who was in Chicago will change that

I cant Link to the article because I dont have a State paper membership, but essentially he talked about Sexual assault and how we need to stop it, firstly by addressing alcohol use.

I am not sure he was necessarily victim blaming, but a lot of students/faculty saw those comments as saying women dont need to drink a lot of alcohol so they wont be in positions to get raped.

So then he wasn’t

ETA: just found it

quote:

“We went after this … not only sexual assaults, but we want to take up the contributing measures toward sexual assault, particularly alcohol. We had to spend a lot of time, a lot of energy, toward educating students about the consequences of alcohol, binge drinking, things like that.”

Sounds to me like he’s talking about people who do the assaulting
Most of the time binge drinking and all hopped up on drugs

ehh lets agree to disagree. Personally glad to move past it, and the new guy is welcome in my book until he screws up.

I think we can all agree we hope he gets rid of Tanner ASAP. sadly I think if Beamer may have bought him more time

I don’t think it’s victim blaming, but it does come off as excusing sexual assault by putting the blame on alcohol consumption.

One can only hope. I really don't want Tanner making the new Mens basketball hire, but to his credit...Beamer so far is looking like a good hire.

My wishlist is simple though, new AD, new Mens basketball coach. ill be happy with that.

regardless, Happy to have you guys here to talk gamecock sports as well as vent with.

He will most likely be doing that at the end of this year
And he gave us Frank.
