Landon Powell ?

The guy looks like he can coach. We know Kingston can't. He's a Gamecock and won a national title at North Greenville. Bring him home. Powell isn’t the only Gamecock on staff. Former USC great Trey Dyson (1999-2002) and former Gamecocks first baseman Matt Williams (2014-18) are assistants at North Greenville. Until this past winter, former USC pitcher Jon Coutlangus had been an assistant under Powell since his arrival in 2015.

No. We need the Louisville Coach with Powell coming in as an assistant. DivII to the SEC is not a jump we need to take though it would be a Ray tanner move.

Coutlangus played CF at USC, he pitched in the majors.

I guess its possible that he pitched here some too, but as a kid he was my hero. #4 and played CF.

but yeah I agree. Landon needs to be an assistant here first

He's in his 8th year as a head coach. I don't think he needs any as an assistant now.

You don't go from Div II to the SEC for a reason.

Doesn't mean it's a good reason. Baseball is not played different and he's a winner there. He could be a great recruiter with some solid assistants who played the game on a championship level. They know what it takes to win and Tanner (I don't like him as an AD) was the best to learn from. It's a no brainer to bring Landon in because the other two with long pedigrees at the Div 1 level have not panned out. That kind of kicks your argument to the curb....big time !

He's winning with transfers from kids who couldn't compete in d1 but are superior to D2 kids. He needs to go d1 and prove he can recruit at that level before taking an SEC job. I know the old guard and old Carolina thinkers who just see Carolina alumni and think that automatically qualifies someone for the job.

Actually it doesn't. Chad had never been a head coach at any level only asst at div 1. Now anyone that says we should have never promoted him is only using hindsight because at the time of the promotion he was the top asst coach in baseball and had just turned Tenn down. Kingston didn't have a "div 1" pedigree ( I don't consider a .500 record at a lower div 1 school a pedigree) and certainly had zero experience in the SEC or a Power 5 school. This is South Carolina not just any baseball team. We are, though sliding away, a blue blood in college baseball. We need to go out and get the absolute best coach available from a div 1 power 5 team. We do not take chances on a div 2 coach, that has made his living off of div 1 player transfers, just because he was once on our team.

Neither is basketball nor football so are you suggesting we should hire a div 2 guy for either of those sports?

Where do you think these guys cut their teeth. Geez....they can either coach or not. It's really that damn simple. Now if he had not been a head coach I might agree and an assistant under Tanner was a no brainer at the time. I thought that was a good move. I thought we should have hired the Dallas Baptist coach after Chad was let go but Tanner went after Kingston instead. Div 1 coaching is no different when you have players and facilities to do it. Landon is doing it with less.....This.....getting a guy whos been there has never worked out with the exception of Spurrier and Staley......none of the rest have done anything...so try something different for a change. Shane is working out just fine.....

Landon is doing it with div 1 transfers not high school recruits. He has never had to recruit or deal with the media and other obligations like a SEC coach does. Shane has been a recruiter at South Carolina, Georgia, Virginia Tech and was even asst head coach with the Sooners so Shane has been through the recruiting fire and is well seasoned in that aspect. You're advocating for a guy that has absolutely zero experience in any of that. Chad and now Kingston have allowed this program to fall off a cliff we can not take a chance on a possibility we have to go get a top tier coach to get us back where we were.

If it were only about coaching during a game but it's all the other things that a Division 1 power 5 coach has to deal with and in that regard Powell has zero experience.

During any game...it's 11 players vs 11 players....plus the bench and bull pens....the talent level and coaching is the only difference. Landon can coach and South Carolina can always recruit. You pass on young coaches who still have a desire to prove themselves and search for guys who are just now reaching the "going through the motion" age. Idiotic at best....

Yet South Carolina hasn't been recruiting at the level we have been accustomed to and the play reflects it. It's ludicrous to suggest that the Louisville Coach or Notre Dame Coach, to mention 2, are just going through the motion. It's still the jimmy and Joe's that get you to the top. How many recruits, besides Gamecock fans, know who Powell is. Your head coach is the biggest recruiting draw and a division 2 coach from Greenville SC is not going to pull top recruits from outside of our state. What's idiotic is wanting to hire a lower division coach with absolutely no experience in the elite baseball conferences to try and lead a blue blood program back to it's glory days.

Lol exactly what baseball league have you played in.

ehhh 9 v 9.

He may be a good hire, and maybe you take a chance on him after kingston as a low risk, high reward take.

I just get why fans would want someone who has coached at a high level (Like what A&M got with Schloss)

It wouldn't be a " low risk". Our program has already gone down due to back to back coaches so if you take the risk on a div 2 coach and he doesn't work out you have successfully just dug a deeper hole to get out of and another 3-4 years wasted. Go get the Louisville Coach and bring Landon on board as an assistant. We have SEC money now go spend it on a proven coach and send the message that we are serious about winning.

What pisses me off is if we fired Kingdone after the season we could have had Link Jarrett locked up
