"I left because we had a mess of a team, and I was the head coach and I created" -Spurrier
Nothing we don't already know, but straight from the horse's mouth:
quote:

“I didn’t leave South Carolina because I disliked coaching. I left because we had a mess of a team, and I was the head coach and I created it and made a bunch of mistakes,” Spurrier said, per Graham Hall of The Gainesville Sun. “Players didn’t like each other, coaches didn’t like each other, and it was time for me to get out of there.

“No one wants to leave under those circumstances, but that’s the way it happened.”

Would've put in the frickery thread, but still need to figure out why that got whacked.

It just disappoints the hell out of me that he knows full well he created the problems and instead of doing the right thing and staying around to at least give a REAL attempt at fixing it, he just walked away and left us with a smoking pile of embers bc the program had already burned to the ground. Just walked away and left it for someone else to deal with while he stayed for a good bit of time in the position of "ambassador" at Carolina.

I lost a ton of respect for him and I will never regain that respect for him. To me, it showed exactly who he really is. A person's true character often is not seen until they are placed in a particularly stressful, difficult situation...the way they handle it speaks volumes. Do they rise to the occasion or tuck tail and haul ass? We all know which of the two he did.

If he was in his forties I'd probably feel that way but he was almost 70. I'll wait until I reach that age and then, if I can remember it, take another look at his situation and make a judgement...but right now I'm apt to kind of forgive him. Not for letting our program fall apart but for walking away like he did. I can kind of understand it, it's not like he's coaching somewhere else now. I'll always like the guy and be grateful for what he did at Carolina.

EDIT: Well I just realized that he is coaching again. hmmmmm

It also should be mentioned that he actually retired the season before but was talked into coming back one more year by the ad and Jeri. His heart was already out of it. We should have already had a plan for his exit.

Makes me respect and appreciate Coach Elliot even more, knowing that he took one for the team. He knew what was going on with players and coaches, yet he tried to rally the troops for one last run.

Eh I wouldn’t say that.
He’s probably just a figure head on the sidelines so people would watch it.
I’ll tell you once the NFL season is over just from looking at the names I’ll sure as hell watch that over the XFL

I feel like this AFL thing hes doing is more of a side hobby/promotion type thing that generates interest and is low stress.

Ill always be appreciative towards him. He changed our program into an actual contender and set us up to be successful in the future. Gave us the keys.

Sure he left it a mess, but the overall state of the program was still better. He was old as shite and just wanted to golf. I get it.

They threw a ton of money at him and said walk along the sidleine, maybe throw your visor a couple times and just do Spurrier things.

Look at some of the names on these coaching staffs.

Mike Singletary, Spurrier, Dennis Erickson and Rick Neuheisel are head coaches.
Mike Vick is an Offensive Coordinator.

Troy Polamalu, Justin Tuck, Jared Allen and Hines Ward are some kind of front office league roles.

And a bunch of former college stars (Aaron Murray, Dennard Robinson, Trent Richardson, oh and Stephen Garcia)

He hung y'all out to dry. Don't get me wrong, Spurrier did some great things at USC and he's an amazing coach. But his last two or so years at USC I think he was "retired" already in his mind and just going through the motions.

A HC that half asses his job is a disaster, particularly in the SEC. Hell, we hired Bielema and he believed that taking it easy during the off season and early season was the best way to keep the team "fresh" late in the season. It will be years before Arkansas can climb out of the smoking crater our program is in thanks to that.

I'm sure Spurrier have a good time walking along the sidelines and throwing out a few zingers with his new job but I don't get the sense he's taking it seriously.

Spurrier quit doing half his job right after he got Lattimore and then Clowney the next year. Once he thought he had enough talent to win big, he quit putting in effort in recruiting, and pretty much left it to assistants.

He hated recruiting to start with, as we all know, but if he'd still been going to do the cha-cha with recruits moms and such when we were finishing in the top 10 every year as a drawing card, we'd be much closer to where Clemson is now than where we ended up.

He did a lot of great things for the school, but he didn't give us his full effort the last few years, and it showed on the field for years.

Right. Y'all had enough talent to coast for a few years and then went off the tracks in a big way. Spurrier did the next coach no favors.

We should have let him retire the season before like he wanted to. He told the ad he was done and our AD got Jeri involved and she convinced him to stay. Her reasoning to him was there would never be another chance to have all the kids and grandkids together and it worked.
