I kind of liked the idea of Rainey at LB.
Rainey had the build and athleticism to be an NFL OLB. It would take him a whole season just to learn the system fully though.
I think what happened was... The Soph's and the Freshman like Moore and Bryant came in and they were in shape and looked good, so the coaches felt comfortable with the depth there and moved him back to TE.
Hopefully Rainey could play some H Back for us as well. He could be a DiMarco type player for us right now, and then in 2 years take over at TE. We are stacked there, so it's going to be very competitive over the next 4 years.

During Spring Practice at UGA, every other day there was a report coming out about guys fighting, and it got to a point where the coaches just stopped breaking it up, let it go for about 10 seconds to get it out of their system, then let the other players break it up. Thugga, yes, but damn good on those young guys for getting in to it and fighting for it. Seems it died down over the summer and guys sort of knew their place by then.
That's what I'm hoping the coaches let them do as well. Shake hands in the locker room and that's the end of it. I think letting lineman get after one another during practice just helps build mental toughness, and when I read about a true freshman coming in with that on Day 1, I can't help but to think "this is a guy who's going to make it happen."
I'm sure at some point it could be a distraction, but like you said, sometimes orders or new orders of things have to be established.

That's what I mean. You have Anderson as a JR and Owens and Adams as SO ahead of him right now. With two TE in the 14 class we're going to be adding more to the mix. He has a brighter future at LB, IMO.

Yes, as a matter of fact, he has.
He's letting Ray Drew in the offensive huddle then letting him back out on DE in the 7-7 so he knows the play and the snapcount, so our OL can prepare for Clowney.
Well, good for him...from what I'm hearing, it's nice that the coaches can find some way for Drew to be able to contribute to the team, before his time at UGA is up...

Yep Rainey could find himself getting squeezed by the depth chart at TE...Owens will also probably try to apply for a medical redshirt to get last season back as well, which would put him in Rainey's class. It's a great problem to have for USC however, especially when we can remember it wasn't too long ago when our TE depth consisted of Andy Boyd with his multiple knee injuries, and Foxy Foxworth...

Just read a practice report stating the Dylan out performed Connor last night, and also that Rainey looked the most impressive at the TE spot.

@RecruitingAJC: WOW RT @NDsidBertschy I introduce 6-7, 270lb @NDFootball TE Troy Niklas .. flipped blocking sled twice, without help,
I don't get it.
And most coaches make you run laps for intentionally flipping the sled, btw.

I'm now seeing reports online that it turns out the blocking sled that the ND TE reportedly flipped is actually non-existent. The TE (Niklas) is on record stating that he is the victim of a prank apparently, and that he always thought the blocking sled was real, and even spent a night sleeping against what he thought at the time was actually the blocking sled, but apparently now has learned that it never existed.
It's sad....

Thanks for this thread guys. Been down here living the salt life for awhile and out of pocket - Sun Times sucks. Was hoping for some good info. Reads as if everything is on track early and as planned. I'm jacked to read that the LBs are progressing and that the new blood is contributing right out of the chute. Figured Rainey was going to be moved back to TE - he's bound to get some backfield blocking duty as athletic as he is - but we seem to have big time athletes everywhere.
Danny Ford once told me he always recruited as many TEs and LBs as he could, good ones, because they are the best pound for pound athletes on the football field and can be used all over the place. Seems like Spurrier and Company have adopted a similar philosophy - or perhaps they've always held to that belief but have just recently found themselves in a position to actually capitalize on that philosophy. Whatever the case it's good having all the outstanding athletes on our roster to plug-in to the system.
