Devin Taylor had a breakthrough season and his teammates, among others, noticed.
The 6-foot-7 Lions defensive end was named the Chuck Hughes Most Improved Award by a vote of his teammates. The award was announced on Wednesday.
quote:
After that game Lions coach Jim Caldwell said Taylor’s numbers were going up in almost every area.
“He’s a guy that typically utilizes speed and speed only, maybe, to get him where he needed to go,’’ Caldwell said in December.. “But we see him bull-rushing with some power, you see a number of things with him that are coming along. So I think it’s just development. Kris (Kocurek) and Matt (Raich) do a great job with him, they challenge him and I really do believe and I say this, he’s just scratching the surface of where he can be, what he can be. But he’s making really good strides.”
The award is named for former Lions wide receiver Chuck Hughes who died on the field during a Lions-Bears game at Tiger Stadium on Oct. 24, 1971

I remember when Chuck Hughes fell over dead from a heart attack. It was tragic because he had been complaining of chest pains for some time before that but the hospital mis-diagnosed it and it led to his death. He was a classmate of my brother's wife at Texas Western, in El Paso.
Devin is just a steady guy. It's rare someone reaches their physical and mental peak this late in life, especially in the NFL, but he has stayed relatively injury free which might allow him to put in another five or six years of really productive ballin' if he is lucky.
He's one of those guys who will return to Columbia one day and become an integral part of the University's mission.

We were sitting about four rows up in the NC State south endzone I think it was ... felt like we could reach out and touch the players on the field almost. Taylor, who was just a freshman at the time if I remember correctly ... ran Russell Wilson down from behind and I remember thinking, "that guy has potential."
But it was the two NC State fans sitting behind us who were really impressed. Wilson was coming off of an All-ACC year and they could not believe a DE ran him down from behind.
He was maybe going 220 then, at best.
Wonder what he is going now? 280? 290 even?

He played at 275 lbs this season, but he still has really good body fat %. With another year like this, he can get paid on the next contract.

He is a smart kid too. He was the true epitome of "scholar athlete".

Mine as well. He never seemed bothered at all by the hype and attention always focused on JC.
Would absolutely love to see him return to USC one day.
