Sawyer commits to the Gamecocks!! Great addition to the team and much needed depth and talent at the DE position. We are starting to stock up at the DE position in talent we have never had before. CLowney was as much of a beast as he was made out to be, but by 2015 we could have Blackshear, Key, Sawyer, Rivers, and possibly Wideman. If that happens I won't know what to think about it....
Yeah, I gotta admit ... I never thought I would see the day when we racked-up year after year like this in the trenches.
We always brought-in very decent skill players - but in this league it is all about the trenches and I never thought I would see the day when we've got'em rolling in like this.
Decades ago I used to tell my family I would live a long time because I wasn't going to die until I saw the Gamecocks win a national championship in football. Now I'm a little worried .... like I need to get my house in order over the next couple two or three or four years - I may have jinxed myself.

Just a quick summary of the remaining targets for 2014.
Damian Prince ***** #2 OT #17 Overall. Roller coaster recruitment, we're in his lead group, then we're out, then we're back in, then we move up, now we get an OV in January. Still a long shot probably, but with OSU and FSU filling up on JUCO OL, our chances are improving. Crystal Ball heavily favors Maryland, but then again it favored NaTy there too for a while.
Derrell Scott **** #2 ABP, #113 Overall. We've been the long time leaders, other teams have come and gone from the picture. It's down to USC, Tenn or NC State, with FSU trying to sneak back in. Crystal Ball heavily favors USC.
DJ Smith **** #13 CB, #130 Overall. Was a clemson lean, saw us whoop their arse a 5th straight time, now he favors us heavily. Could play Safety or CB. I don't know why, but I think he might be the next recruit to commit, total guy feeling, nothing tangible to base this off of.
Wesley Green **** #16CB, #155 Overall. Once committed to SC, decommitted b/c HS HC got involved. Whammy still feels good about situation, we're holding a spot for him. Will surely read about DB's from UGA complaining about being told one thing in recruiting to what is happening with them now. Crstal Ball projections b/w UGA and USC are pretty much even. Won't decide until late, coming for an OV in January.
Dexter Wideman **** DT/SDE #17 DT, #187 Overall. Committed to FSU. Has been to USC campus 4 times since then. Making an impact the Shrine Bowl camp. 22 Crystal Ball predictions for him to flip to USC. Another great SC player, who needs to stay in state. Working on grades/test to qualify.
Nate Brown **** #42 WR, #303 Overall. Sawyer's teammate. Had a really good Sr season statistically. Committed to Mizz. UGA is also trying to get in the picture to keep him in state. Crystal Ball is split b/w Mizz and UGA, no predictions for us. We only offered in November. I would say it's a long shot, but I believe he's coming here for the OV in January 17.
Ra'Shaun Croney *** #66 ATH, #745 Overall. We have him in a holding pattern. We'll see what happens, we are his leader.
Kevin Bronson *** #96 ATH/WDE, 1100 Overall. Has over 20 offers, but we're his biggest and most recent offer. Miami, UF and Neb have offered. Will take an OV here on Jan 17th. Crystal Ball heavily favors Rutgers and then Miami.
Corbin Daly *** #3 Punter, #1310 Overall. He was committed to Texas, but decommited before the Brown resignation. We haven't offered a scholly yet. He'll probably go to either UNC, Tenn or USC (whoever offers the scholly.) If none do, he may come to USC, no crystal ball projections to go by.
Chris Lammons **** #20 CB, #199 Overall. There's a rumor that we are trying to get back in with him, but he's been committed to UF for months. I don't think a flip is likely, unless there is an unexpected coaching change there. We'll see what happens, but I'm not holding my breath on this one.
Darrius Caldwell **** JUCO #1WDE JUCO, #13 Overall JUCO. He would commit to us if we offered. Deke was down there last week to check on his grades. If it all checks out and he can qualify, we told him we would offer. He was just ranked yesterday. We offered him out of HS, but he went to Illinois. He then transferred to the JUCO and now he may end up here. He's gotten MUCH bigger and stronger since HS.
I don't know how many more we'll take, all the 4 star and up guys I'm pretty sure are takes. Caldwell's rankings was a little surprising. I watched some of his highlights and there's no doubt he can play at a high level, but I didn't think that he would be moved up to #1 WDE. With J Thomas already coming here, we could end up with the 2 best JUCO DE's in the country this class AND Sawyer. USC is becoming DEU!

Prince is a prospect that programs oversign for, so I doubt depth will matter a lot from the school's end. It may matter on the prospect's end, but USC has solid depth as well. I guess the extra OL spot we've opened (up from 2 we were originally taking with Stanley and Young) used to be Vonashek's.
Clemson is also sliding in on Scott: they have a butt-load of RBs on their projected depth chart for 2014 - Brooks, Howard, Dye, Gallman, Davidson, plus incoming Ogelsby, Choice, and Fuller. That's 8 RBs on the depth chart!!!!!
Now, I've read that Howard has his degree already and may be gently nudged out the door. And one of the incoming RBs (Ogelsby??) is having academic issues and may not make it past admissions, which could be why Clemson is attempting to heat up with Scott. But that's still a ton of backs with most of them underclassmen for Scott to contend with. I doubt Clemson makes any big moves with Scott...
Looks like the Jan. 17 recruit day is going to be a HUGE recruiting day for the program. Most everybody we're still in the lead for, plus many others we've moved up with, will be in Columbia that day. Hopefully we take care of our remaining needs and close this great class off in style...

According to the folks over on tigernet Clemson is a morally superior program that wouldn't ever dare stoop to these dastardly tactics used by USuC and other SEC schools

My favorite gripe is about how Dabo is a man of character and we he offers a recruit a spot, and the recruit commits, that means their recruitment is over and they can't take visits. Then, if they do take visits he pulls the offer...except if they are a highly rated recruit like Nkemdiche, then it's cool and he bends over. It's taterpocricy.

I'm still trying to figure out how we fit in the whole Damian Prince situation. He's a Top 10 Overall Player, #2 OT from Maryland.
The Pros for USC are: his HS OL Coach was Na'Ty Rodger's HS OL Coach. Also, out of his Top 5 we are the next closest school, beside Maryland. You can drive from Cola to where he's at in about 7 hours (and it's mostly I-95 before the DC beltway...so you miss that jam.) If his family wanted to come see him at UF, FSU, or Miami, they would have a 2 day drive or have to catch a flight. Our OT starters are pretty much locked for next season (if Robinson comes back, ) but I think both will leave after '14. We have 7 OT's on the roster and aren't bringing in any this year, 4 of them will be RS Jr's or Sr's in '14. So '15 is wide open for the entire 2 Deep. Elliot has also shown that he can develop players and recruit for the position well and we're winning a bunch of games in the toughest conference in CFB, we're going for out 3rd consecutive Top 10 finish/11 win season. He will take an OV in January.
Cons would be: Still not the closest school out of his favorites. Honestly, he wouldn't start his FR year, unless injuries happen or unexpected early NFL departures. He may be able to break the 2 Deep, like Na'Ty did his FR year.
For Maryland the Pro's are: obviously it's the hometown school, close to family/friends. He would probably see the field very early, if not his FR season. He took an OV in November.
The Cons would be: Maryland is 7-5 this year and 3-5 in the ACC. They're a bad team in a bad/poor conference, who is moving to a much better conference where they will most likely be overwhelmed. I can't remember the last time Maryland was in the Top 25 for recruiting. This is a team that will stuggle against Iowa and Penn St, and those aren't even the best teams in the conferece. Their starting OT's are both Soph's. You would have to believe that they'd be the starters next year, having 2+ years in the program. They brought in 3 OT's last year, and 4 this year. 1 is the #1 JUCO OT, Derwin Gray and another is the #9 HS OT. Finally, you look at HC Edsall and he's 13-23 as the HC, how long will he be around? They fired the last HC after a 9-4 season. To top off everything, Prince got FaceTime death threats from people who wanted him to go to Maryland or suffer the murder of him and his family...that's just fricked up.
FSU, his co-leader or #2, makes much more sense. Pro's would be: a great team in a bad/poor conference that wins a lot of games. They recruit well for all positions and the program has a lot of tradition and support. He took an OV in November.
Cons would be: Really far from home. They recruit so well, it will make getting PT even tougher. Their OT starters are Jr's, but their 2 Deep is wide open after '14. They only took 1 OT in '13, and had a couple JUCO's in '12. In '14 they have 7 OL commits, 4 are OT's (including JUCO Kareem Are, the giant Rubie and the #2 JUCO OT, Mavety.) They also have several OT's listed as Top Targets, Prince among them. They might be slow playing the 4 other highly rated OT's seeing what Prince is going to do.
The other 2 schools in his Top 5 are Miami and UF. They're in the same boat as USC, in that they are not the top 2. Both recruit well, both have tradition, both win...wait, scratch that.
both are really far from his home.
All in all, USC could deliver the best of the winning/distance ratio out of the group. We'll see if it matters when he signs. After getting those thoughts down, at least I feel as if I have a better picture of why we're in his picture in the first place.

Poona Ford is now in the picture again. Apparently Deke never stopped recruiting him, even after his commit to L'ville. Whammy went by his school last week as well. IDK if he's a take, or a backup plan incase Wideman doesn't flip/qualify. I read that he's been doing really well at the Shrine Bowl camp.
His rating on the various pay sites has actually gone up or stayed the same over the season.

Just messing around with the 247 Class Calculator, if we landed:
Damian Prince
Derrell Scott
DJ Smith
Wes Green
Darrius Caldwell
Dexter Wideman
Poona Ford
we would end up with a Top 10 class and about 260ish points.

Setting the sights a little high aren't we? But yeah, it'd be frickin amazing.

Oh yea, that's the pie in the sky/best case scenario, but with some of the talk around the recruiting circles and the way some of the things are developing, I don't think it's beyond the scope of possibility. Maybe like less than an 8% chance of landing all those guys, but our chances keep going up.
This whole Prince development deserves a whole lot of popcorn, it rather entertaining.

More good news:
Tyshun Samuel, WR USC Commit, bumped up to a 4 Star today on 247. He's had a great Shrine Bowl camp and impressed a lot of people.

Darrius Caldwell is now a 4 star, #1 247 Composite WDE JUCO. He said he will commit to SC once he is offered. He hasn't been offered yet, b/c Deke is waiting to see if his transcript will clear admissions. Darrius isn't set to graduate until May, so there's not a huge immediate rush. Deke was hoping to know this week, but hasn't been able to confirm with admissions that Darrius will be eligible for enrollment.
Hope it works out,

They bumped him up to a 92 rating today and now he's in the Top247.
Also, Dexter Wideman jumped 100 spots to #65 overall on 247 and the #8 DT.

FSU 247 site is now reporting that SC has moved ahead of them and SC is #2 behind Maryland for Damian Prince. They feel he'll choose Maryland, but that they're losing ground.
Marshall's thumping of Maryland in the bowl game also probably isn't helping Maryland right now, to go along with their future Big10 schedule. They're in Big10East with Ohio St, Mich, Mich St, Penn St and Rutgers.

This is a big deal. We are increasing our national footprint, and that is a great thing. Here's to hoping this young man makes the right choice and decides to play in the best conference in the land.

Another Damian Prince update:
Tom Brattan, Maryland's OL Coach was fired today. Tom was Prince's recruiting Coach at Maryland....This is getting more and more interesting....
The still have Coach Mike Locksley, who is a recruiting animal and he will take the lead now in Prince's recruiting. However, Prince had been building a relationship with Tom for years, and you gotta believe this works in the Gamecocks favor.
