We are in the running for the top DE from Virginia, correct? Hand is his last name. How does he compare to Nkemdiche or Clowney?

From what I've read, Nkemdiche isn't as good nor had the stats that Clowney did. Hand has really good stats, but take into consideration his level of competition isn't equal everywhere.

Hand is better than Nkemdiche at this point in time (comparing their Jr years.) Hand is faster and has a greater wingspan, while only giving up a little weight but maintaining the same height.

Clowney was a once in a decade prospect, Hand is very talented and will have another year to show it. I'm sure Hand is focusing on being the best he can be and making a name for himself rather than comparing himself to Clowney or Nkemdiche.

We are in Hand's Top 5, so that's a great position, but it will be a battle to pull him out of Va Tech's territory. Notice he also had a great relationship with Lawing. When Lawing went to UF, Hand dropped UNC and put UF in his top 5.

I don't know how likely it would be that we would get Hand, but I feel comfortable in saying 2 things I rarely say about a prospect.
1. If he came to USC, he is a program changer, we're going to win a bunch of games b/c he's on the field for us. I've only said that about Gilmore, Lattimore and Clowney.
2. If he came to USC, he would start, at some point in the season Looking at the 2 Deep projection for 2014, we have English, Washington, some hybrid MB's, Dixon, Covington, and Harris. Most of those guys are weakside size DE's. I'm confident that Hand will be a strong side size DE (for a 4-3), by the time he walks on campus. So I see him starting from the first game on.
Clowney could have done that, but he had an All American 5 year Sr, Ingram, starting ahead of him.

Looks like only Rivals and 24/7 Sports have any rating of 2014 prospects out at this time...Rivals have a top 100 and top 250 "watch list" of the top prospects out.

(Note: On Feb. 13th Rivals disclosed an additional list of 43 prospects for 2014 that they rated as 4*, but did not rate their top 250. So I have added their 4* ratings to those below that didn't make the top 250)

Top in-state 2014 prospects that we have offered:

OL Donnell Stanley, Latta (current Rivals 4* and 34th overall prospect, 24/7 4* 95-grade)

OLB Christian Miller, Spring Valley (Rivals 4* and 91st overall, 24/7 4* 94-grade)

WR Shaq Davidson, Gaffney (Rivals 4* and 96th overall, 24/7 4* 96-grade)

ATH Kevin Crosby, Jr., Bamberg-Ehrhardt (Rivals 4* and 132nd overall, 24/7 4* 90-grade)

DT Dexter Wideman, Saluda (Rivals 4* and 137th overall, 24/7 4* 93-grade)

TE Kalan Ritchie, Goose Creek (Rivals 4* and 212th overall, 24/7 3* 88-grade)

DT Naquez Pringle, Carvers Bay (24/7 4* 92-grade)

DT Poona Ford, Hilton Head (247 4* 90 grade)

RB Caleb Kinlaw, Goose Creek (24/7 3* 87-grade)

WR Blake Bone, Woodruff (Rivals 4*, 24/7 3* 85-grade)

Top out-of-state prospects that we have offered:

DE Da'Shawn Hand, Woodbridge, VA (Rivals 5* & 1st overall, 24/7 5* 100-grade, 1st overall)

DE Lorenzo Carter, Norcross, GA (Rivals 5* & 9th overall, 24/7 5* 100-grade)

DB Marlon Humphrey, Hoover, AL (Rivals 5* & 10th overall, 24/7 5* 99-grade)

OL Damien Prince, Forestville, MD (Rivals 4* & 31st overall, 24/7 5* 98-grade)

LB Dillon Bates, Ponte Vedra, FL (Rivals 4* & 58th overall, 24/7 4* 91-grade)

WR Josh Malone, Gallatin, TN (Rivals 4* & 72nd overall, 24/7 4* 95-grade)

DB Ronnie Clark, Calera, AL (Rivals 4* & 78th overall, 24/7 4* 93-grade)

OL Bentley Spain, Charlotte, NC (Rivals 4* & 86th overall, 24/7 4* 96-grade)

DE Justin Thornton, Prichard, AL (Rivals 4* & 112th overall, 24/7 4* 96-grade)

LB Bryson Allen-Williams, Ellenwood, GA (Rivals 4* & 247th overall, 24/7 4* 91-grade)

DT Peyton Newell, Hiawatha, KS (24/7 4* 92-grade)

OLB D'ronzjiah Matthews, South Fort Myers, FL (24/7 4* 90-grade)

As CIYE has already addressed, Hand is looking in the early stages as being a much higher regarded prospect than Nkemdiche was. I remember all through Nkemdiche's process, the major sites such as Rivals and 24/7 were questioning if others would over-take his claim to the top spot...players like Hargreaves III and Carl Lawson had articles posted that suggested that they were as deserving as Nkemdiche was.

No one ever came within breathing distance of catching JD, and all through his final recruitment year the "insiders" raved about him being an "All-Time" top-rated prospect. Nkemdiche is just a typical every-cycle overall #1, but Clowney was/is special....

Early in the forecasts for the 2014 class, Don Brosco's Jabrill Peppers was thought to be a front-runner for overall #1 as far back as late 2011. He's still the overall #2. But Hand made a bit of a splash this past year in the spring and summer at all the combine invites and camps as a rising junior against all the rising seniors, and wowed all the evaluators present. And now no one is really saying that the others are close to de-throning him, although there's still another year to go...

DB worries me this cycle. There are a ton of great ones (plenty in TX) but not many obvious targets for us. We need to lock up a shut down corner.

Looking at our board, I think landing Bentley Spain has to be a huge priority. To me he looks like the catalyst for a big class: get another top NC prospect and others will take notice and follow (Derrell Scott fits this mold, too, but w/ our success recruiting Havelock getting him should be a little easier).

Really like Braxton Berrios, too.

I agree on the DB: both Hampton and Legree will be gone for '14....for '14 we'll have rs-jr. Christian, jr. Elder, rs-so. McWilliams and Moody, and sr. Martin. That's it. And Ahmad may be more focused on baseball by that time, and Elder may have grown into a full-time safety too. There could be an outside chance that Hampton stays for his senior yr. for '14, but he was looking at the NFL hard after this past season as a 3rd-yr. so. so unless he's injured for 2013 I doubt he stays...

The issue is we'll have such a small 2014 class that I don't know how many DBs we'll be able to bring in, and not have it hurt us at another position....

As for Spain I also agree: we have several top OL for this class that we're already very highly rated with, so I would be surprised if the OL we bring in aren't all 4* rated. Spain is one of the top ones on our board. Also Stanley is another top 4* OL we're in great shape with, but I don't like how he talks about Alabama like he does: he seems like they would be the program that could steal him from us, and he's the type prospect that they'd offer....

Berrios is very under-rated at this point IMO...

Good points, I agree that DB is a concern in '14, but it's not that bad. I put the guys we have right now and who I thought might be a 2 Deep player in '14 in bold.

CB Breakdown '14
Hampton - Sr, but he might leave early, would start if he didn't.
Christian - Jr, should be on the 2 Deep.
Elder - RS Soph, should be on the 2 Deep
McWilliams - Rs Soph, depends on how he comes back from ACL.
Martin - RS Jr, he took a RS at JUCO, so I thought he has 3 to play.
TJ Gurley - Jr, we'll see how he responds to the injury. He was a Freshman All SEC this past season.
Groves - RS Fr, has a decent QB's vision, could be great.
Cooper - FR, may not redshirt this year, he's sick. Probably at least the 2 Deep in '14.

I'm more concerned about Safety's in '14.
Brison - Sr, we'll see what he does this season.
Marcus - Sr, we'll se what happens this season with him.
Moody - RS Soph, has potential, but I don't know right now.
Fleetwood - RS Soph, still an unknown at the college level.
...that's it for true Safety's, so it's a big priority for the '14 class.
Sasser - RS Fr, or who knows, he could play, safety is ? for '14.

Spur I feel a little better about in '14.
We've had studs in the position for the past 3 years. So the younger guys have a good model to follow.
Golightly - Sr, was on the 2 Deep last year, should be in the 2 Deep. undersized for the position though.
J Diggs - Rs Soph, Should be on the 2 Deep, stud in HS.
Rainey - Rs Soph, has the best size/speed to play this position out of everyone, but we'll see what happens, it will be new to him.
Camara - RS Fr, I don't know if he'll make the 2 Deep.
I would also like to see us move Larenz Bryant here, he's as fast as most most playing safety and he has the LB and training of a LB. We'll probably keep him at LB though.

Great list, Conway. I wanted to point out the guys we currently Lead with or are in their lead group. However, this is really an "at this point in time" type thing since these are 17 year old guys we are talking about and could change over a weekend.

We are the Leader/Favorite for:
DT Dexter Wideman, Saluda (Rivals 4* and 137th overall, 24/7 4* 93-grade)
LB Bryson Allen-Williams, Ellenwood, GA (Rivals 4* & 247th overall, 24/7 4* 91-grade)
DT Naquez Pringle, Carvers Bay (24/7 4* 92-grade)
WR Shaq Davidson, Gaffney (Rivals 4* and 96th overall, 24/7 4* 96-grade)
OL Donnell Stanley, Latta (current Rivals 4* and 34th overall prospect, 24/7 4* 95-grade)
RB Derrell Scott, Havelock, NC (Rivals 4* & 141st overall, 24/7 4* 91-grade)
DT Peyton Newell, Hiawatha, KS (24/7 4* 92-grade)
DT Poona Ford, Hilton Head HS,, SC (247 4* 90 grade)
WR Terry Googer, Atlanta, GA (Rivals 4*, 24/7 4* 90-grade)
We are looking good for signing at least 2 Top Tier DT's.

Highly recruited guys we are in the Lead Group with are:
DE Da'Shawn Hand, Woodbridge, VA (Rivals 5* & 1st overall, 24/7 5* 100-grade, 1st overall)
DE Lorenzo Carter, Norcross, GA (Rivals 5* & 9th overall, 24/7 5* 100-grade)
DB Marlon Humphrey, Hoover, AL (Rivals 5* & 10th overall, 24/7 5* 99-grade)
OL Damien Prince, Forestville, MD (Rivals 4* & 31st overall, 24/7 5* 98-grade)
LB Dillon Bates, Ponte Vedra, FL (Rivals 4* & 58th overall, 24/7 4* 91-grade)
WR Josh Malone, Gallatin, TN (Rivals 4* & 72nd overall, 24/7 4* 95-grade)
DB Ronnie Clark, Calera, AL (Rivals 4* & 78th overall, 24/7 4* 93-grade)
OL Bentley Spain, Charlotte, NC (Rivals 4* & 86th overall, 24/7 4* 96-grade) (In his Top 2)
DE Justin Thornton, Prichard, AL (Rivals 4* & 112th overall, 24/7 4* 96-grade)
QB Drew Barker, Burlington, KY (Rivals 4* & 153rd overall, 24/7 4* 94-grade) (In his Top 3)
DT Anthony Moten, Fort Lauderdale, FL (Rivals 4* & 170th overall, 24/7 4* 90-grade) (In his Top 2)
OLB D'ronzjiah Matthews, South Fort Myers, FL (24/7 4* 90-grade)
TE Milan Richard, Savannah, GA (24/7 4* 90-grade)
OLB Jacob Pugh, Tallahassee, FL (24/7 4* 90-grade)
DB Dominique Brown, Ocala, FL (24/7 4* 90-grade)
ILB Deshaun Davis, Mobile, AL (24/7 4* 90-grade)
WR Braxton Berrios, Raleigh, NC (24/7 3* 89-grade)
ATH Kevin Crosby, Jr., Bamberg-Ehrhardt (Rivals 4* and 132nd overall, 24/7 4* 90-grade)
TE Kalan Ritchie, Goose Creek (Rivals 4* and 212th overall, 24/7 3* 88-grade)
RB Caleb Kinlaw, Goose Creek (24/7 3* 87-grade)
WR Blake Bone, Woodruff ( Rivals 4*, 24/7 3* 85-grade) (Top 2)
There's a fistful of other 3 star recruits, mostly WR's that we are in the lead group with.

Looking at that list above, and from reading that we are only taking (give or take a few) 15 signees this next cycle.

I'm thinking:
2+ OL's
2 WR's
1 RB (but I've read some places that we are looking for 2)
2 CB's
2+ Safety's
2+ DT's
2 DE's
2 LB's
That would be 15, but the 15 number isn't firm and everything is always flexible. The numbers always work out.

We already have 1 LB, Joe Blue. So we will probably look for 1 more OLB.

You're right about Ronnie Martin having 3 years to play 3 instead of to play 2.....I forgot he was injured his last season in JUCO and only played in the first 3 games, and got a medical redshirt. Also Elder has been talked about by Coach Brown as being a candidate to help out at safety as could possibly Moody, so they could help the depth there....

#Gamecocks DT Poona Ford receives a four-star, 90 rating by 247Sports (FREE)

2014 class DT Kaylon "Poona" Ford of Hilton Head...I didn't mention him in the list above, but we've offered him and 24/7 sports has him listed as a "Favorite", which means I guess we're #1 for him...

We seem to have a SICK list of DL for 2014 that we are heavy favorites or among the top leaders very early in the process: Wideman, Pringle, Newell, Allen-Williams, and now Ford. Add in Hand of course which will be VERY difficult for us to pull but we're in his top list of favorites.

But once again DL as well as OL is looking very strong for us for the '14 cycle. I just hate that our class is going to be so small...

Heard over on CT that Allen-WIlliams wanted to commit to us on his visit but his mom is making him wait. I think he still may be a lock at this point.

Poona had 44 TFL's his Jr year, wow!

He has a hand timed 4.85 40 yard, which is fast fro a guy weighing in at 280 lb. I'm curious to see what kind of stats he puts up at a rivals or nike combine though.

Shaq Davidson. If you have 5 minutes, check out this guy's short highlight reel from last season. #5 WR on 247, lead candidate for Mr Football SC next year, plays at Gaffney. We are his current leader, but Ga Tech, Notre Dame and Auburn have recently offered.

Pretty solid looking player. He has the hands, body control and ability to break initial contact like Alshon, but he also has some wheels. His first steps and acceleration are really good for a guy his size. He's not as tall as Alshon, but he can go up to get it.

Shaq Davidson, Jr Highlights

This guy is ours to lose. We lead big with at least 5 of the top recruits in-state and we know how good those boys in Gaffney are. This guy is like shaq roland but quicker.

Edit: Just watched the film again, amazing how quick his routes are and how he sheds tacklers. Seriously hope we get him.

That's what I'm noticing too. He was listed at 6'0" 175lbs his Jr season, but he played like a guy who was bigger and stronger than that. His team ran that WR screen several times, and he would just shed the first guy that touched him. Then there were plenty of other plays where defenders got both hands on him for a wrap up, but he just powered through them and broke loose.

The level of tackling will obviously get better in the SEC as opposed to HS, but he shows a tenacity for going for more yards and pushing the play.
