Wow that's some real head-in-the-sand type thinking from you two.
To those who make the point a/b our coaches evaluating talent very well:
I agree, they do evaluate talent very well. However, it's foolish to act like we're deliberately taking these lower ranked guys over the higher ranked guys b/c our staff thinks they're better. In many cases WE TRIED w/ the guys who tend to be more highly ranked before moving on to the guys we ended up getting. Our staff pursued Foster, Lawson, Alexander, the DE from Don Bosco, Marcell Harris, etc. The great eye that many on our staff have for talent has helped us to minimized the gap b/w the haves (Bama, etc) and the have nots (us) b/c we get some diamonds in the rough rather than just reach for a guy based on a recruiting services ranking of him, but let's not act like our staff didn't want these top guys and didn't try for these top guys. Walton and Moore look like quality LB's who I'd like to land but let's not act like they were our first or even fifth choices.
To those who say it's a down year for SC talent:
Very true. And I'm partial to this excuse, though I don't think it explains away everything. Even so, we still whiffed on much of the top in-state talent (Terry, Hill, Williams, Boulware).
To those who say it doesn't matter next year we'll have a great class:
Don't count your gamecocks before they hatch is the obvious caveat. But also, this is the SEC, guys. You can't take years off in recruiting. Bama, UGA, Auburn, UF aren't sitting on their laurels this recruiting season and Ole Miss, Vandy, Tenn, Arky and even UK are waiting for us to stumble. We may not be in the former group yet but let's also not consign ourselves to the latter.
Question:
If in 2007 I told you that our recruiting in 2013 would be basically unchanged from the present even after a historic three year run would you accept that? Would you have questions?
This is NOT the same Carolina. We should NOT be content w/ doing things the old way. I didn't set these expectations for our football program, OUR COACH DID. The goal is an SEC championship, is it not?

In all seriousness...
Are you saying our coaches DON'T evaluate talent very well? There is a direct relationship with the number of top recruits in the state of SC to the number of SC recruits we sign. I don't see where we're doing anything wrong, other than the simple fact that, every now and then, it's possible to miss one.
There are ZERO big names this year. We went after Terry, but we weren't hurting for him. The other top recruit, Mike Hill, wasn't a blip on our radar after about 2 weeks of looks. We got Turner from Goose Creek and Bryant from Charlotte, and that's about the best we could have done around here.
I cannot agree with any of your assessment. There's nothing wrong with us. We aren't having a down year, the talent in SC is, and we've gone through preventative measures to ensure that we won't see a gap in the next few years.
Anyway, just my $.02. GO COCKS!!

... If I told 1997 you that Carolina would be pulling in consistent top 25 (not top 20 (where we usually are these days) or 10 or 5 (what we are building towards).. but 25!!) on the regular you would have been ecstatic. This program has progressed in leaps and bounds in the last fifteen years. Are we where we would like to be, or can be? No. But to expect us to jump from mediocrity to elite, Alabama level after three great years is idiotic.
You can't supplant 100 years of a mediocre product by painting a new coat of paint on it and hoping no one asks about the dings. Conversely, take a look at Southern Cal. That program has been middling to bad the last couple of years, but still pulls in top level recruits because it has a foundation of success. Texas and Tennessee are other examples.
Building up to being able to pull in any recruit you want takes time. But we are definitely getting our foot in the door these days. So, while I would love to sign the top 22 players (regardless of our actual need...) and just call it a day... I'm not going to start lamenting our lot when it doesn't happen.
