So what is the deal on recruits coming in and working out?

That seems to be a pattern for this staff. Its not a negative I'm just asking. Do other programs do this?

Yes other programs do this. Way for coaches to see a player especially QBs without a camp

Our previous staff did it as well. It’s standard practice

100% routine. Devonta Smith said he got an offer from Alabama because he attended every camp, event, and workout he could in Tuscaloosa. Then Bama offered and everyone else offered.

It’s going to be even more common this year.
Plus, recruits like it. They get a feel for how they’ll practice and be coached

I was under the impression that sometime in the 2000-aughts that it was made illegal by the NCAA. Didn't Saban/UA get into some minor trouble for working out players when he first arrived at UA? I seem to recall that but maybe I'm misremembering. It also seems its talked about in most of the recruiting articles this year, where it hasn't in the past.

I might be wrong but wasn't Saban working them out at their school instead of on campus? That might have been the issue

Yes, I think that was the case now that you mention it.
