Summary:
A new compound based on iridium, a rare metal which landed in the Gulf of Mexico 66 million years ago, hooked onto albumin, a protein in blood, can attack the nucleus of cancerous cells when switched on by light, researchers have found.
--------------------------------------------

The treatment of cancer using light, called Photodynamic therapy, is based on chemical compounds called photosensitizers, which can be switched on by light to produce oxidising species, able to kill cancer cells. Clinicians can activate these compounds selectively where the tumour is (using optical fibres) thus killing cancer cells and leaving healthy cells intact.

Thanks to the special chemical coating they used, the Warwick group was able to hook up Iridium to the blood protein Albumin, which then glowed very brightly so they could track its passage into cancer cells, where it converted the cells' own oxygen to a lethal form which killed them.

Not only is the newly formed molecule an excellent photosensitiser, but Albumin is able to deliver it into the nucleus inside cancer cells. The dormant compound can then be switched on by light irradiation and destroy the cancer cells from their very centre.

Guess theyre getting closer to a cure then. Good

While great news it does present a problem in that Iridium is incredibly rare on Earth and is already in high demand for electronic applications. Gold, as an example, is 40 times more abundant.

We probably have a lot of Iridium, but as the second densest metal most of it probably sank deep into the Earth when the planet was molten. It is, however, fairly common place in asteroids.

Because it is so rare we don't have a tremendous amount of research in how it impacts human health long term once its entered into the body. Still, this is very promising research and something to continue to study.

This is great news! Thanks for sharing.

I also saw the other day that some Israeli scientists are claiming they found a cure for cancer as well. They claim they'll have their cure to market within a year.

Don't know what their cure actually consists of or whatever, but it really does look like cancer will soon be a thing of the past.

Notice that Trump mentioned during his SOTU address that one of his priorities moving forward is putting an end to childhood cancer.

I truly believe that they have already figured out how to stop this shite, but cancer is a big money maker. So cancer is something they would rather treat than cure, IMO.

Maybe things are changing.

Damn, seems so obvious in hindsight

I have a friend who's an oncologist and he said, only somewhat jokingly, that more people are making a living from cancer than dying from it.

Colloidal silver is also a cure for cancer. Drink a lot of it and you turn blue and cancer don't bother you.
