No, it isn't. Bear Bryant in the late 70's is still my benchmark. He was just so dominate back then. The guy was college football and the South all wrapped into one.

I'm not, by the way, pooing on what Saban has done. He has had an amazing run. I still give the nod to the Bear but Saban is a first vote hall of fame coach.

Choosing between Bryant and Saban is something I think most programs would love to have as a dilemma.

If he ties Bryant's NC record, he will. Some of Bryant's were split polls. All of Saban's will have been the established NC recognized by all NCAA schools. Also, Saban is doing it in an era where there is far more parity in college football. From 1971-1979, few teams in the SEC could even give Bryant a good game. One loss to Auburn, one to Ole Miss, and one to Georgia. That's it.

Bryant in the 60s-70s taught Bama fans to expect to win any and every game we played. Saban has reinforced that feeling.
