Stringers are common in journalism and I have been one, as well as a user of stringers back in my previous career.
Stringers either share the by-line or get a "contibuting" line at the end.
Yancey is playing fast and loose with the term Stringer.
He posted bullshite on Twitter, got called out, and made up imaginary interns to blame it on.

The free market usually takes care of the questionable pay site guys. If it’s bullshite, don’t pay for it.
