Why is clever play-calling made fun on here? I also think Harsin will be a failure, but that is an innovative play. It clearly worked.

Because it's seen as a weakness? It is in my book and I think it is for coaching as well.

The Mad Hatter and Gus loved them some misdirection. Once discovered however, it seemed to work against AU and LSU.

Plus, Les seemed as if his one big win (9-6 in Tuscaloosa) validated him as a genuine, excellent coach - not needing trickery. Wonder what he'll do now...

The wishbone/spread/air raid/rpo were all called gimmicks until teams started dominanting with them, and then everyone ran them. Boise State using 2*s beat Oklahoma's 4/5*s using "whirlybird" plays. Saban has maintained his dominance by adapting to the modern game, not staying stuck in his ways. The 2011 game was due to Alabama's kicker having a shitty night, while LSU's succeeded.

What Les Miles games were you watching? He ran a few trick plays a season and they generally worked his entire career. The rest of his offense was the complete opposite of misdirection.
