Unfortunately the days of easy tailgating options are long gone. And with a huge tailgating area (Spence Park) undergoing renovations this year, a lot of people are being displaced and will stress the other tailgating areas with extra demand.
I think your best bet is probably buying a Lot E parking pass that grants you access to the parking lots surrounding Reed Arena, and in turn you can tailgate in the grassy areas around Reed.
But if you want to tailgate out the back of your vehicle, you will need to find a specific parking spot along the perimeter of the parking lot. I think the unwritten rule is the car parked along the grass gets exclusive access that particular patch of grass adjacent to the parking spot. All other grassy areas are first-come, first-served and will be claimed early Friday afternoon.
If you are just looking for a patch of grass to throw down some chairs, you can probably find a spot Saturday morning. If you need a spot adjacent to your car, that's going to be a lot more difficult.

Thanks for the response. Is it okay to setup a couple of chairs behind the car on the parking lot and crack a beer or two?
