ND has only gotten away with their indy status because they have a true national brand that goes beyond sports. That’s how they can get their own network TV deal. No other team in the country has that on the same scale.

Even Bama’s and Texas’ appeal is limited to sports. ND has fans who follow them for no other reason than they are Catholic. I also know several fans of other teams who support ND on the side on the basis of religion. No other program has that other than BYU, and they don’t have the size and reach that ND does.

Clemson doesn’t have religion, Bama’s long history, or UT’s size to prop them us as an independent. That’s not an insult, either. Even Texas wanted to be in a bigger conference and made it happen. Clemson is much better off cashing in on the ACC’s mediocrity the way that FSU did for many years.
