To add on to this, it was only in 1947 that Florida State got that name and stopped being a women's college.

In the three years before Bowden took over, the FSU football program was a doormat going 0-11, 1-10, and 3-8.

Nebraska did well before Tom Osborne. Not so FSU before Bowden.

While Bowden clearly took FSU to new heights that they'd never achieved, they had been a good program in the years before Muddra and Larry Jones under Bill Peterson. They went to 4 bowl games between 1964 and 1968 and finished ranked in the Top 15 3 times. They went 62-31-5 between 1964-1970. Peterson came from LSU, where he was Dietzel's OL coach (and signed Billy Cannon) during 1958-1959 (LSU went 20-2, 11-1; won the 1958 national title and finished #3 in 1959).

FSU then went 4-29 from 1973-1975, and Bowden was hired in 1976.

1964 (BP) : 9-1-1 (#11) (Gator)
1965 (BP) : 4-5-1
1966 (BP) : 6-5 (Sun)
1967 (BP) : 7-2-2 (#15) (Gator)
1968 (BP) : 8-3 (#14) (Peach)
1969 (BP) : 6-3-1
1970 (BP) : 7-4

1971 (Jones) : 8-4 (#19) (Fiesta)
1972 (Jones) : 7-4
1973 (Jones) : 0-11

1974 (Mudra) : 1-10
1975 (Mudra) : 3-8

1976 ---- BOWDEN
