re: Bobby Bowden started head coaching in 1959. From 1959-2020 where does he rank all time.

his three non conference games were #3 Miami, @ #2 Notre Dame and @ #7 Florida

I get that but are you REALLY giving FSU "credit" for playing UF and Miami? Do they really have a choice?

The SEC was nowhere near as good in the 90s as it is now. For most of the decade it was Tennessee, Florida, and one, maybe two teams from the West, with the rest of the league being average to below average

Pretty sure Bama won a NC in the 90's and AU had a undefeated year and just because LSU sucked in the 90's doesn't mean the rest of the conference did.If you actually think FSU goes 4 years in the SEC without losing you're delusional.
I mean Bowden flat out admitted that joining the ACC was an easier path to a NC.Do you want me to pull up the quote?

so he wasn’t dodging anything when he still played Florida and Miami every year

He dodged the SEC and admitted it.
Why is this difficult to digest?

Like I said, it was Tennessee, Florida, one one or two teams from the rest of the conference. Yes, teams from the west had individually good seasons, but the west as a whole was horrible. Most of the East was horrible. shite Georgia was very average as the third best team in the East. South Carolina had multiple winless seasons. Vandy had zero winning seasons. Kentucky had one winning season at 7-5.

Florida won 27 straight SEC games from 1994 through 1997.

FSU tried to join the SEC for 30 years from the late 50s through the 80s. They were always told no. When the SEC courted prospective new members in 1990, yes FSU, along with Texas, Texas A&M, Miami, Arkansas, and South Carolina, was lobbied to join. And yes they ultimately said yes to the ACC after being black-balled for 30 years. The SEC also voted against inviting FSU. Miami also said no thanks and joined the Big East

The proposed alignment also would have had FSU playing Florida, Tennessee, Alabama, and Auburn every year, incredibly unbalanced compared to the rest of the conference.

You get it, clearly many on here do not

To be fair both Florida and Miami were in the same state so not like Free Shoes U was going far away for those games. You could sleep in your own bed for those games.

Folks who were not around back then have no idea what it was like. Beating Miami before the 80's was like beating an in state directional school. Florida football started with Charlie Pell and really started with Galen Hall. Not like the Gators were a football powerhouse before that. Heck before the 80's the Wildcats were better at football than the Gators.

1. Yes, there was a choice about Miami. UF dropped Miami in the 80s. FSU could have also.
2. Yes, his Bowden Humor came out in that SEC remark. He did NOT make the decision to join the ACC. That was pushed on him by the Faculty, the President, and AD Bob Goin.
He could have been in the SEC, fought Spurrier, up and down Bama and Auburn, UT and been just fine during the 90s. I had family in the FSU Athletic Department back then, so I know what I speak of.
3. You are either very young or stupid
4. Another point, LSU courted Bowden in 1979, they offered, he declined. Everyone knows about Bama the first and second time. 2 Premier SEC programs obviously thought enough of Coach Bowden to try and hire him. He would have wrecked the SEC at LSU or Bama either one.
