OU was also the winningest program overall in the entire country during the 70s, which is weird because I would have bet good money it would have been Alabama.

I'm guessing Oklahoma didn't have any down years in the 1970s while Alabama started the decade off with the last of Bryant's "down years" before we converted the offense (6-5-1 in 1970).
