From my perspective, it seems entirely plausible that Gus implemented a used-to-be-successful offensive system that was as simple as he could possibly construct so his players' learning curve wasn't as steep.

That's exactly what he did. Gus didn't want players having to think and wanted coaches to make all of the on field decisions. Gus wanted it to be as simple as possible to take pressure off the players. If a play needed to be changed at the LoS, Gus had his players look over at the sidelines. It's a different kind of philosophy and I kinda understand where he's coming from.

Harsin wants the opposite. He wants his QB making his own audibles. He wants his players understanding exactly why the defense is doing what it's doing and how to attack it. Harsin basically wants his team to operate like a pro team. This is a different philosophy from Gus.

I don't think one is better than the other, it just comes down to execution and recruiting.

IE: Didn't delegate

Like so much besides the defense. He had to do it all much like the indispensable man and that was a large part of what the HUNH was. Were it was hiding or glossing over players making any call. He could just say do it again, over and over, and many didn't now why or when they should be wary. The next three calls were already predetermined and yes it involved playing percentages and trying to set up a scheme. But he was reading the defenses and then you'd see him get crazy animated.
