Was looking at the roster and the incoming recruits/ defense and there's a lot of talent & depth for Derrick Mason to play with. Wish we had a one superstar Nick Fairly type player but this unit can jell they have a chance to be special. This is obviously just a best guess but this group looks pretty deep and talented for a great defense mind like Mason to work with.

DE Hall/ Butler / leota

DT Truesdell/ Fair / JJ / Hunter / Burks/ Harris

DE Wooden / Brooks/ Height

LB Owen / Wooten / Tisdol
LB Zakoby/ Moultry / Steiner

If we can keep them off the field, they should be solid. I think they will be way better than the other side of the ball.

Linebackers should be great again.

There is a lot of talent on the defense. We should be really strong at linebacker and in the secondary. McCreary, Miller, Pritchett, and Smoke are all future NFL guys IMO. Somebody like Smoke could really blossom under Mason, who is very hands on with the secondary. Smoke obviously has a knack for big plays (a few pick 6's and big sacks in his career) but he has struggled just with consistency. If Mason can get him in the right spot more consistently I think he could have a huge year.

The defensive line is obviously the biggest question mark, but I believe Hall and Wooden are the real deal and there is plenty of other young talent along the line with guys like Hunter, Walker, Brooks, Butler. I really expect the defense to be solid this year, I think it is just a matter of how quick it takes to catch on to the new scheme and whether we can we generate a pass rush consistently that determines if it can be a great defense.

Also, we need to get back to being great on 3rd down defense as well. We were one of the best of the country at this in 2019, but fell back to one of the worst in the SEC last year.
