I agree 8 teams seems better but a 12 team playoff is better than the current system and the BCS.
It creates an objective goal for every team in the country to have a path to the playoffs.
It eliminates bowl games. Unfortunately not enough of them.

Regardless how people feel, we can't have barriers to a championship where only a few teams can realistically achieve. If conferences won't equalize competition, then allowing more teams in the playoffs will help distribute the talent. I would do 16, but 12 will work.
