Gov. Kay Ivey has signed into law a bill that says college athletes in Alabama can receive compensation for their name, image, and likeness, a move intended to align state law with expected rules changes from the NCAA.

Lawmakers had passed the bill last week.

The sponsor of the bill, Rep. Kyle South, a Republican from Fayette, has said the main purpose was to make sure Alabama universities are not at a recruiting disadvantage because the state does not have such a law in place. South’s bill has an effective date of July 1, the same date as a law approved by the Florida Legislature.

For practical purposes, South said the compensation rules won’t apply until the NCAA adopts bylaws allowing payments.

South’s bill says Alabama colleges cannot unreasonably restrict athletes from receiving compensation for use of their name, image or likeness from a third party. Athletes could also hire an agent or lawyer to help them with contracts.

If there is a law restricting NIL on the books, it is not a waste.

Any NIL type law on the books will get challenged (and lose) in court once the NCAA gets rid of the rule .
The legislature changing said law is much easier than it going through the court system.

LOL, like that would ever happen. Red Elephant Club owns the entire state and has sleeper cells all across the country. Funny how no one ever takes a look at that.

I guess we could say that this is a rare example of a government entity in Alabama being proactive rather than reactive.

We don't get too much of that, unfortunately.

I really don't even think she knows what she signs anymore.

Very selective at best, but not impossible. Coach Bryant had George Wallace make a recruiting phone call to Condredge Holloway to ensure him how much he's welcomed at Alabama.

So who is making these payments to players? If they are on the cover of a game program, does the University pay? If it’s uniform sales, does Nike, Adidas or Under Armor pay? I don’t see how this doesn’t reduce school revenues to some extent. If Nike has to pay players, that has to come out of what they pay the school.

Dunno the answers to any of those questions. What I do know is, if I owned a marketing firm. I would be at every 5 star skill players, house.

Nothing really changes right now, but it puts a law on the books for when the NCAA allows athletes to get money from 3rd parties, and prevents colleges from pulling scholarships because an athlete took money.

I guess.

But I also would be surprised if any college did such a thing as the primary reason.

Personally, I think the NCAA doing such a thing will be bad for the sport.

They may not try, but it's still a good idea to have the law in place.
