Remember myocarditis? Study finds only 0.7% of college athletes w/ COVID had heart issues.

A study released Saturday examining more than 3,000 college athletes who had COVID-19 found so few instances of heart-related issues that future cardiac testing might be used only for athletes with certain symptoms.
In the study, published in the American Heart Association's journal, Circulation, researchers found signs of possible, probable or definite myocarditis, or heart inflammation, in 21 of 3,018 athletes (0.7%) who had tested positive for COVID-19. It also showed that athletes with heart issues were more likely to have had moderate COVID-19 and/or cardiopulmonary symptoms. The study included male and female athletes from 42 colleges and institutions across 26 sports.
Dr. Jonathan Drezner, director of the University of Washington Medicine Center for Sports Cardiology and a co-principal investigator of the study, said the results will help colleges and the NCAA refine cardiac-screening protocols for athletes who have tested positive for COVID-19.
"The bigger message is for the athletes who only have mild symptoms or no symptoms, it's not clear you need to do any testing at all," he said. "And I would be comfortable simply doing a good review of symptoms and making sure when they get back to play, they feel well."
The low prevalence of post-COVID-19 myocarditis in college athletes from the study, and the tie to moderate and cardiac symptoms, is similar to the findings of a larger-scale study of professional athletes released last month.
Over the past year, it was common for schools to do cardiac testing on all athletes who tested positive for COVID-19. One common "triad" protocol was to conduct an electrocardiogram, a blood test for troponin protein and an echocardiogram -- or ultrasound -- of the heart. In some cases, students also underwent cardiac MRIs.
Drezner said cardiac MRIs should be used only if an athlete has moderate symptoms such as "fever, body aches, laid up in bed," cardiopulmonary symptoms, an abnormality on any of the triad tests, or cardiopulmonary issues after a return to play. Using a cardiac MRI, an expensive tool with limited availability, as a primary screening tool can lead to overdiagnosis and unnecessary restrictions on an athlete's play, he said. "There is potential harm," he said.
Baggish wrote in an email that schools could use the results of the study to "do away with blanket testing for student athletes with asymptomatic or mild disease assuming they fully recover and get back into exercise with no issues, [and] confine the costly and sometimes complicated cardiac testing to student athletes with moderate or greater symptom burden or symptoms on return to exercise."
Researchers also determined that COVID-19 did not cause any athletes in the study to suffer a heart attack or related event; although one athlete did suffer cardiac arrest, it was determined likely not to be coronavirus-related, Drezner said.
"If you look around the nation, there's 8 million high school athletes with maybe an infection rate of 10%. College probably an infection rate of 20%. And we're just not hearing about these adverse events," Drezner said. "That's also indirectly sort of reassuring."

it was always a red herring to me. The Covid thing started and they make these presumptions about heart problems. Just like the vaccine that hasn’t really been tested. More fear mongering by the media again.

I do not believe it’s even that high. Two points here:
1) We have all heard of every death somehow is related to covid, which is why you never heard of a flu death this year. Name a year that we have not been pelted with news of flu deaths until covid. Very convenient isn’t it.
2) We have heard of players who have sometimes died on the practice field and even off the field from a undiagnosed heart issue BEFORE covid.
I don’t believe anything they say.

not making a value judgement on the Summer 2020 panic that caused the Big Ten and Pac-12 to cancel their seasons (prematurely in retrospect)....but ~1% of a large population is still a lot of people

Yes and soon we will be saying the same about COVID. 99.x% recovery rate. Fake pandemic.

It's certainly a shame that anyone's health suffered (to any degree) as a result of this pandemic, but it's simply not logical to mandate what 99.3% of people must do predicated on the plight of 0.7%.
This is a reality of life, and a concept that I wish those governing us better understood.

The reason we ended up in this scenario was due to hospital capacity problems. We may have one of the most advanced medical systems in the world but the distribution of capacity is subpar for a first world nation. Places like Winston County in Alabama doesn’t even have a doc in the box anymore. Of course, we’ve got a lot more space to cover than most other similar nations.
We could’ve mitigated that problem and kept things more open but it would’ve involved spending a ton of money which inevitably means that big businesses get taxed more and that was a nonstarter. So small businesses are going to eat shite and die all over the place while Amazon flourishes in this economic dynamic.

I agree, and I'm afraid we haven't begun to scratch the surface on the economic fallout from this past year.
One thing is for certain though - the mistakes that were made will slowly be uncovered and released like this study, reported on as an obscure article hidden away on a Saturday, when no one is paying attention.

The thing is, every death is said to be because of Covid. Die of plain old age and it’s covid. Die of the flu being elderly and it’s covid. Every obituary of every entertainer is “Covid.”
Speaking of the Flu, go look up past numbers of people every year who died from the flu. We don’t shut shite down because of that do we. Furthermore, we had a bad flu recently because the vaccine was only 30% success rate yet not ONE mention of it by media.
