With his ego ,I have always been surprised that he accepted his failure in the NFL. I have bet friends in the past that he would try to prove to himself that he could coach on a level like Pete Carroll or Jimmy Johnson. Coaches who won in college with great talent and could translate that to a pro level.
Nick Saban only coached two seasons in the NFL. He inherited a team that was 4-12 the previous season and went 15-17. After their first two seasons as head coach in the NFL, Pete Carroll was 16-16 (his second year he inherited a team coming off an AFC championship) and Jimmy Johnson was 8-24. Bill Belichick was 13-19.

I do not think anyone would ever call Saban a great game coach As it was said about Bryant , he could beat you with his players and then take your players and beat you.
In Saban's defense, he hasn't had many opportunities to win as an underdog. I personally think he did some of his best coaching in 2008-2009 before he had a roster stacked with a elite talent. He was a heavy underdog against teams like Georgia ('08) and Florida ('09) and beat the brakes off of them.

Talent is the key
At every level.
You mentioned Pete Carroll and Jimmy Johnson. Pete Carroll has a HOF quarterback in Seattle. Johnson had a HOF QB at both Dallas and Miami. Barry Switzer is the other coach to win both a national title and a Super Bowl and he had Hall of Famers everywhere in Dallas. He also inherited an Oklahoma program that Chuck Fairbanks built, just like Johnson inherited a Miami program that Howard Schnellenberger built.
