Bowls have become meaningless once the playoff formats started. There is zero incentive to play in bowl games if you are declaring, so you might as well expand the playoffs like the vast majority of us wants.

Playoffs or no playoffs only 1 or two bowls had any bearing on the National Championship. I'm not sure why people believe that before the playoffs or before the BCS it was wide open. It wasn't.
