You'll cry about the 8th spot

Incorrect. The serious dropoff happens around 6. Anyone below 8 wouldnt be worth consideration at all.

If the drop off is at 6, we may not even need 8 seeds.

Have two play-in games (3 vs 6 and 4 vs 5) to settle the 3 and 4 slots for the semi-final bowl games. We can call it a wild-card round.

So you believe that ND has a legitimate chance to win the Championship?
How about Florida?
Texas A&M?
Oklahoma?
Cincinnati?

because in an 8 team playoff those are the ones making it. The dropoff happens way before #6.

The serious drop off starts around 2 or 3 at max.

None of these teams would have been remotely considered for the #1 spot in the history of college football. Not in the poll era, not in the BCS era and even now your argument is based around the 4th place spot.
