Most of the guys skipping the bowl game are opting out to focus on the NFL draft, senior bowl time with NFL scouts, and combine training. They are making a business decision a lot of folks in their position would take.
I have no issue with bowl opt outs - they can actually be a good thing for young guys on the team for next year to get some playing time they would not have gotten. Mid-season opt outs are a little different. I agree that COVID has probably forced more than usual this year as a lot of the players have to follow very stringent contact tracing / testing protocols to play and it probably gets old.
