UGA, TAM and Florida all had a shot to beat Alabama and get in the playoff....all failed to do so with only UF being competitive for 4 quarters. There is a lot of upside to playing in the SEC but currently a major downside is having to play Alabama during an era when they have been as good or better for what, 10, 12 years (and counting), as any program in the history of the game, at least once and possibly 2-3 times to win a natty (it is possible that the SEC east winner could lose to Bama in the regular season, beat them in a close one the SEC CG and face them again in the playoff...the SEC east could also beat them during the regular season and lose a close on the CG but that scenario is less likely for anyone other than Bama). UGA has straight up lost a natty to Bama in 2017 and arguably lost another one in 2012. It is what it is. If you want to win a natty from the SEC right now you gotta beat Alabama...at least once...and TAM, UF and UGA all had a shot THIS year to do so.....
