Exactly. Like after the Sugar Bowl for the '73 title, they lost to Notre Dame and turned right around and claimed the title anyway. The next year, the UPI changed their rules to have their champion named after the bowls.

Show me just ONE team awarded an AP or UPI national title that doesn't claim it. Just one. And I'll shut up.

Everyone knew how the championship was awarded in those seasons before the seasons started. No one was confused.
