It's the new kids trying desperately to fit in with the cool older kids over and over, and failing every time. They still get their hopes up every time they get invited to the party, only to realize they were invited as a joke so the cool kids could give them swirlies and pants them in front of the hot girls.

It's kinda sad when you think about it.
