They both had a drive result in a FG (D'Wan's was in garbage time, but still)

The Mail Man did deliver, for sure, but it's good to keep in mind that Mathis was hamstrung with penalties in the first half that made it harder for him to be successful.

The penalties in the first quarter were cringeworthy bad, I hadn’t seen anything quite that bad since the down Richt years.

He eventually settled down but the guys gave him no help.
Here's what it boils down to: in the absences of other leadership the O needed a steady handed vet at QB to calm things down after a very shaky start. Mathis couldn't provide that at that specific moment so he had to be pulled.
Doesn't mean he can't run the offense. Doesn't mean he has no future at QB.
