Quiet as it's kept Lovie Smith has done a great job at Illinois. Illinois is a lot like California politically now especially with Chicago running the politics of the state and damn near the entire midwest. Also your instate pool of Black athletes is decreasing in Illinois. Illinois especially Chicago might have the largest Black outmigration of any U.S. city.

Yes he has and he doesn’t get the credit. That job shouldn’t be as difficult as it is, but he’s done a very good job. At a Southern school, I believe he would be a home run hire or at least close to one.
