Clemson was in a spot that being slightly more committed to football than peers in football was enough with Miami and FSU committing program suicide to win enough to start the national prominence ball rolling. They then fed off it.

Then UGA failed to do that when they had that chance when Missouri won the East twice! It is still going on but each year window is closing in very fast!
