Ouachita and Wichita come from the same word. I just learned this today and I’ve been going to Lake Ouachita all my life. Never made the connection. Wichita is the English spelling and Ouachita is the French.
The S’s at the end of the state names have an interesting story too. The Kansa was the name of the tribe there so the English called them the Kansas, with the S at the end making it plural. But the French called the tribe here Akansa, and added the silent S to make the name more French.

Très chouette!
I believe "Ozark" is an anglicized version of the French phrase "Aux arc" which means "at the arch". Like Louisiana, Arkansas has a lot of French history.

That was a fun fact. Really enjoyed that, thank you! I had no idea.

Actually we were "Louisiana" when we came to belong to the United States in 1803. The Louisiana Purchase included all of present day Arkansas.
By 1836 we were being admitted to the Union along with....Michigan. We were the slave state, they were the free state. Only Florida, Texas and WV (in 1863...as the war was basically starting) were admitted later to the union as slave state. WV did not exit the union, joining the other border states as 'slave states' that did not secede.
The other 4 slave states that did not exit the union are: Delaware, Maryland, Kentucky, and Missouri.
Note: This means that Washington DC (between Virginia and Maryland) was in fact in the area where slavery was legal. Slaves actually were integral in building the national capital and the white house, so look for those to be torn down next.

Good stuff. Missouri not seceding was the reason we had so many Civil War battles in north Arkansas. Pea Ridge, Prairie Grove, etc. Confederates were trying to go up through the Arkansas border to “take” Missouri, the Union was trying to stop them. Eventually the Confederates just stopped trying.
I used to live on the top of Dickson Street and found some artifacts in the yard. Old horseshoes and stuff that I didn’t think was much of anything. Then I read about it and the Union had cavalry and artillery right where my house was, shooting cannons down Dickson.

It’s funny because Ouachita and Wichita are so close but I never thought to make the connection. I’ve shared this fact with family and friends the past few days and everybody’s mind is blown and they also had no idea.
