This phrase, from people on any side in a COVID discussion, is a pretty clear indicator that they are driven by ideology more than a neutral, unbiased search for the truth. Very little research about a disease that barely existed six months ago is conclusive. Most research at this stage is suggestive or probabilistic--and the overwhelming majority of work that I have seen, in addition to the overwhelming majority of people who should know better than you or I, suggests that widespread mask wearing would significantly decrease the spread of the virus.

So I think Phil is basically right here. Has it been shown conclusively? No, because there haven't been large-scale random trials. But I'm pretty confident that widespread mask wearing right now would increase the likelihood of a more normal football season this fall.
