True....Hiring Joe for that one year should have been the plan. He may have stopped that inside trap. Joe had already filled in for the Hogs when they replace their HC after the 1st game (I think it was the 1st game).

Don Shula was and is the winningest head coach in the NFL. He was just a youngster when he coached the Baltimore Colts and he was of course on the wrong end of Joe Willie's guaranteed win in 1969. But the dude knew his stuff and the Bob Griese and Butch Cassidy/Sundance Kid, Mercury Morris, and No Name Defense were his best teams by far. He just couldn't get Dan Marino/Killer Bees to the big payoff. Dan the man just wanted to sling it and the rules still favored the ground troops. Still a great coach and still the only team in the NFL that ever finished a season undefeated. That Shula would have been a great choice in Alabama.

When Price was fired, we were still in the depths of probation. The Board & President pretty much knew that it was going to be tough to lure an elite coach to UA. We had been a turnstile for head coaches at that point. Shula was basically hired to be a sacrificial lamb and just sustain things until we get a little further down the road. It’s why he was chosen over Croom.
