I've found more and more that most popular 80's music is the same as today's popular music. Glamorous and devoid of meaning.
70's is slightly better but in general mainstream music sucks, no matter what time period it came drom.

Pretty much all 80s rock bands suck arse
It's probably cancelled now, but Def Leppard, Motley Crue, and Poison were all touring together this year: that is definitely one of my circles of hell. Especially in their current dilapidated 2020 old washed uo versions of themselves

Does the corona virus make people lose their sanity? If so, I think you got it.

He’s right. A lot of 80’s bands put out catchy songs, but very few of those bands can you dive into their discography.
I don’t think Van Halen “sucks arse”, as they are very talented musicians, but their entire discography is just a bunch of singles with no meaning. None of their albums flow together.

Sammy Hagar Van Halen I'd agree. Pre Hagar Van Halen was ok. Nothing amazing but fine.
Full disclaimer my first concert was Poison and Warrant on the Unskinny Bop/ Cherry Pie tour.
She's my cherry pie, leave a smile on your face 10 miles wide!

Yeah that's how rock works, for the most part any way (there are some exceptions). They were making hits so they'd get radio play and could keep making more.
If you think you're gonna find something deep about life on an ACDC album, you're wrong.
They were rock stars and not poets for a reason

It doesn’t have to. Lynyrd Skynyrd, Rush, Green Day, The Who, Pink Floyd, even Billy Idol put out great concept albums, while still being rock stars.
Music is best listened to by album, start to finish, with a common theme.

As i said there are exceptions. Bruce Springsteen and yes Tom Petty fall under that as well. I am still mad that Petty let the cocaine and that guy from the Eurythmics take over and pretty much wreck Southern Accents. Alotta the outtakes are solid
LINK (yes this one got released on Full Moon Fever later, but was supposed to be on SA. Theres a demo with him and Stevie Nicks singin it but i dont think its quite as good)
LINK (this one didnt see light of day until a couple years ago, he tried to rewrite it a couple different times but the other versions arent as good)
LINK (again theres a demo of it from the 80s but its an incomplete song, he finished it with his HS band Mudcrutch a few years before he died)
Thats just 3 of the outtakes. Far better than stuff like Mary's new car and forget about me. Yet, they didnt make it on. Similar thing happened with the album before it where the producer stripped off some songs that were less rock oriented, they arent bad and its a shame they got left off.
Anyway Im rambling. My point was, there are just some hits by other bands i genuinely enjoy and dont care that their other stuff is lack luster. It tends to mean i just buy a greatest hits album instead of multiple albums from them. Just cause they had really high highs and some low lows doesnt make them bad, just different

Yeah. Tom Petty and Bruce Springsteen definitely fall into that category. Both are great at telling stories through music.
If you want a great rock concept album, listen to Drive-By Trucker’s 2004 “The Dirty South”.
Great album.
Three different guys split vocals. Jason Isbell, Mike Cooley, Patterson Hood.
Isbell is a 4 time Grammy winner from his solo stuff.
