That's always been the rumor/claim. It's unlikely that it would have been more than a few, otherwise why would he get hired to start with? But always a few dumbasses, so I wouldn't doubt it if some were.

Texas recruiting improved after he left, but he still brought in top10 recruiting classes and managed to go 5-7 in the Big12 his final 2 years.

So even if there were some truth to it, it doesn't really excuse the level of bad Texas was.

The AD and/or the school administration may have wanted Charlie while some influential boosters did not. Hell, that's what it looks like is going on at USC with Clay Helton. The administration wants Helton while some influential boosters do not.
