Clay Travis with an excellent article on why recruiting matters, especially in the playoff era. Bottom line, you need AT LEAST two recruiting classes that have finished in the Top 10 in the last four years. Though aside from 2010 Auburn and 2016 Clemson, every national champion since 2001 has had at least three recruiting classes finish in the Top 10 in four years.
13 teams meet the standard of two Top 10 classes in the last four years:
Alabama (4-in-4)
Georgia (4-in-4)
Ohio State (3-in-4)
LSU (3-in-4)
Clemson (3-in-4)
Oklahoma (3-in-4)
Texas (3-in-4)
Auburn (2-in-4)
Michigan (2-in-4)
USC (2-in-4)
Notre Dame (2-in-4)
Texas A&M (2-in-4)
Florida (2-in-4)

looks about right, I would bet that the winner comes from that group

I hope we do but not looking like it's going to happen. I'd say Bama has the inside track. Hopefully if it happens, Nick moves on to the lake house in Georgia.

All he said was those universities each have two recruiting classes that have finished in the Top 10 in the last four years.
He didn’t say, “My pick for next year’s champion is Texas A&M.”
Some of y’all are weird.

Draw that line right after auburn and lump in Florida and you have a realistic NC candidate list

You want to get technical about it, any team can.

Bullshite.
The Rant tells me Alabama is done and LSU has no shot.

LSU's one recruiting class ('18) outside the top 10 got tigers a Heisman winning record setting QB.

Florida is my darkhorse this year to make a run

Drop off starting with Texas is significant. I'd be surprised if more than one team beyond OU makes the CFP & would bet none make the final.

I agree, though I may bump the line of demarcation a couple of spots higher.
Is Clemson really going to be as good as predicted?
I know it’s the argument du jour, but it sure is tough to pick them as champs, based on their conference.
Outside of USC, it’s crazy how far off the map the PAC 12 has fallen.

Clemson & OU I'd say have to be in the mix based on recent history & lack of conference competition.
Yup, PAC 12 just doesn't seem to care. I don't see that trend changing anytime soon.

I mean...the only reason why the line of demarcation is 2-in-4 is because Clemson and Auburn managed to win the national championship with just two Top 10 recruiting classes. Everyone else has required at least three.
The national champion, if you go by this reliable recruiting statistic, will be one of the following schools:
Alabama
Georgia
Ohio State
LSU
Clemson
Oklahoma
Texas

Well they barely lost anyone.

I gotta think it is Bama or Clemson.
Clemson for the same reasons as always and Bama because they are going to be out for blood.
Ohio State is a good call too, but they lose a good bit on defense.
