If Holtz was spectacular, was Hatfield almost spectacular?

While Frank was here, we never had any coach that wouldn't let Frank Broyles be heavily involved in the football program. That was the primary factor in determining who was coach.

That's why we never got Jimmy Johnson. That's why we got saddled with Nutt for years and years. Kissing JFB's arse was always the number one criteria.

Jerry Jones runs the Cowboys under the same model, and that's why the Cowboys have been underachievers for most of the time he has owned them.

That is a fact.

Hatfield actually had a better winning percentage while he was here.

Broyles did a lot of great things here but he was terrible at micromanaging coaches in sports he cared about. Its why Holtz "retired", Hatfield left for Clemson sight unseen, Sutton said he would have crawled to Lexington, and Nolan hating Broyles so much he practically begged to be fired.

On the other hand, other than assuring that we would have the best facilities in the world Broyles didn't give a fig about track. Which let McConnell thrive here.
