Actually the bowls themselves can make it without attendance because of the insane TV money these days. It's why you see so many bowls, so poorly attended but they keep adding bowls to the slate.

However, a good bowl committee understands the politics of the community and would work hard to fill the town with people to spend money on hotels, food, entertainment, etc...

This is true. But bowls do like the optics of seats filled in the stadium.

Very true in small towns. Shreveport, Mobile, etc. This is as much of a driver as anything. It even matters in some of the "smaller" large cities like Memphis and New Orleans.

But when you get to gigantic metro areas like NYC, LA, Dallas, Miami, etc., this really becomes a non-factor. There is so much going on in those cities at any given time, one football game can go unnoticed. It's just not a factor.
