My grandpa did. All his shirts had little burn holes in the back because he'd smoke it while riding his motorcycle and the embers would blow out and hit his back
My Dad smoked pipes until his mid 30's. He would put the lit one in back pocket of his suit and most of his pants had the same burn holes. I remember at age 10 he would send me into the drugstore to buy tobacco while he waited in the car. A lot different today.

I bought a corn cob pipe after college. I was never a cigarette guy and liked pipes better than cigars. It was also a good conversation starter. I lived in Nashville (making no money). I went downtown to Printers Alley to hear some blues music. Cover was $20. Since I made little money, I sat in alley and smoked pipe. Bouncer comes over to me and says “love the pipe, Cover charge on me if you want to come in”.
