Alabama's best shot is if the other possible team is Oregon, and if Alabama wins very convincingly at Auburn. A common opponent is a very strong data point, and Alabama would own that convincingly.

Maybe, but to this point the committee is valuing wins over Losses. That is why UGA with the better wins was over Bama with definitively a much more respectable L. Alabama was also arguably a more rounded team with that potent O, but the committee seemed to value the wins more.

I think Oregon is a threat because they were very competitive vs AU in a game played 3 months ago. Oregon could end up the season with 12 straight wins. They have said they want teams to schedule better NC opponents. Had Oregon played Sam Houston State there would be no issue... and I'm not sure this is a message the committee wants to send.

"To this point..." is exactly nothing more than that: to this point.

And, to this point, Alabama is ahead of Oregon. If Alabama soundly defeats Auburn in their house behind a back-up QB, that makes Oregon's loss to them at a neutral site even worse.

UGA being ahead of Bama is really irrelevant, as far as Bama is concerned. Bama has needed LSU to beat UGA, and that's still true. UGA loses and they're out.
