I’m sorry deserving does matter. Or else playing games doesn’t matter. Results wouldn’t matter
You have to mix ability of the teams with their results
For example Ohio state were good enough to be in the playoffs but losing to Purdue mattered. So yes there is a “deserving” part to selecting teams

"Most desrving" is nothing but media gobbledygook/ lawyer speak/ social justice warrior/ participation trophy/ loser bullshite. That's why it's about the BEST FOUR TEAMS.
But you are correct, one of tne best four teams does not get shithoused/ ran out of the damn stadium by unranked Purdue.
