10th grade for me.
My memory of Georgia’s season that year was SC playing in Athens with what would be George Rogers Heisman Trophy year but Herschel had the highlight of the day. Herschel took a handoff on about Georgia’s 10 yard line, broke past LOS and sprinted 90 yards for a TD. Our safety had a great angle and was closing at about the 40 yard line but Herschel hit another gear, the angle disappeared and he was gone.

that's the very definition of hitting another gear. You're right, the DB had a textbook picture perfect angle. 99 tiems out of 100 he closes in and at the very least pushes the ball carrier out of bounds. But Herschel had world class speed (he beat carl lewis in a track meet once) and the dude had no chance.
