they were trying to escape its shadow.

This is the correct answer.

Thats the best decision they ever made. The Big 12 is a shithole from a negotiating stand point. All those schools are getting financial taken advantage of.

Here's the perfect example.

In 2009, Texas A&M was the least-televised team in College Football. There were six regular season games that year where it was not possible to view the game on any channel anywhere. They weren't televised on ABC all season, despite language in the Big 12 TV contract requiring all schools to have at least one game on ABC.

Here was that schedule:

vs. New Mexico: Radio Only
vs. Utah State: Radio Only
vs. UAB: Radio Only
vs. Arkansas (Arlington): ESPN2
vs. Oklahoma State: Fox Sports Net
at Kansas State: Fox College Sports - Central (special PPV subscription package only)
at Texas Tech: Radio Only
vs. Iowa State: Radio Only
at Colorado: Fox College Sports - Central (see above)
vs. Baylor: Radio Only
vs. t.u.: ESPN

Even in the 2010 season, when A&M tied for first in the Big 12 South, they had four games not televised at all that season (Stephen F. Austin, Louisiana Tech, Florida International, Texas Tech) and three games only regionally televised (at Kansas, at Baylor, vs. Nebraska)
