Part of the job requirement of a college head football coach is to acquire talent, so if he knows he’s lacking in X’s and O’s Dept, he’s more than compensating in the recruiting dept.

I would break down the necessary attributes of a CFB coach in this order.

1. Adequate leadership. Doesn’t necessarily have to be an inspirational leader but needs to have a firm grip on the program so that it doesn’t roll off in the ditch at some point.

2. Excellent recruiter. No one wins big without great players.

3. Has a good understanding of football at a macro level. Doesn’t have to be an X’s and O’s savant but understands schemes and where the game is headed.

4. Hires good assistants.

Saban is a 10 at #1, #2 and #3. #4 has been lacking in recent years and he needs to address constant staff turnover one way or another. Staff stability is where Clemson is gaining the upper hand over Bama.
