You might say Gus Malzahn is in the same boat. Some AU fans feel like he's beaten Saban a few times and played for a Natty as HC so we should be happy with the 8-5,7-6 turds that he routinely lays. Thompson and Pearl have proven you can be a consistent winner in sports we don't have a winning tradition in, so why not football?

He went 7-6 once and his average is slightly better than 8-5.
Who could you hire that you know is better? Who?

Gus Malzahn, has been a HC for a Big 5 program for how long?
The promise he shows is pretty damn good. Let's see if he can learn and grow into a HC that can win 10-12 games a year. You youngsters think these great HC's are in abundance. You youngsters also think Auburn has always been a consistent 10 win program and that just isn't true. So yes, there are some of us who think Gus might just work out, and aren't immature and needing instant gratification.
