It's not tax free. The US is one of the only first world countries that taxes ex-pats as though they were still in the country. If you work overseas, you pay whatever the local tax is and US income tax. It's about the only area where Americans are taxed more than our 1st world counterparts. (It's obviously different if you're not in a civilian job - e.g. military).

One additional benefit to many playing overseas is they are, many times, also provided free housing and living expenses as part of their contract in addition to their salaries. I know a lot of basketball players playing overseas are provided deals like this so I would think baseball could have similar deals as well.
